Chieftain 2100X excels in coal

The company produces high quality coal products at increased speed at their coal separation facility, providing additional financial benefits.

In 2013, Hayes Fuels purchased two Powerscreen® Chieftain 2100X mobile screens from their local Powerscreen dealer, Powerscreen Ireland Ltd. for an operation at Belfast Docks, Northern Ireland. The first, is a two deck mobile screen with a 90mm top deck and a 6mm self-cleaning bottom deck. The oversize material is redirected back into a small jaw crusher in a closed loop. The mid-range material is passed into a coal washing system at 120 tonnes per hour. After washing the coal is transported to the second Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X three deck screen, where it is separated into four different washed coal products. These products are then either bagged or bulk shipped throughout Hayes Fuels extensive distribution network.

Ronan Conroy, Operations Manager for Hayes Fuels, said “We have used the smaller Powerscreen Chieftain models in the past, but the larger Chieftain 2100X screens work extremely well for what we need. The coal arriving off the ship can have a fairly high moisture content and the self-cleaning screens on the bottom deck, combined with the aggressive action of the screenbox deal with this with ease.” Conroy continued, “Once the material is washed and graded on the second Chieftain 2100X, we are left with a premium product. At Hayes, we run on double shift rotation therefore downtime has to be minimal, especially if there is a ship unloading at the dock. In our experience the parts and service support from Powerscreen Ireland has always been exceptional and was definitely a deciding factor when purchasing these machines. Fortunately, overall reliability for the Chieftains screen is excellent and the machines have easy access features for maintenance which help reduce downtime for servicing when it is needed.”

Oliver Donnelly, Product Manager for Powerscreen confirms why the Chieftain 2100X screen is an ideal model for the Belfast Docks coal operation. “The Chieftain 2100X is designed for operators just like Hayes Fuels who require large volumes of high specification product. User benefits include a patented hydraulically folding recirculating conveyor which eliminates the need for a crane on site for installation and moving. High performance is achieved via its two bearing 20′ x 5" (6.1m x 1.55m) screenbox with adjustable amplitude and speed and hydraulic screen angle adjustment. It also features a rapid set-up time of typically under 30 minutes with hydraulically folding conveyors and track mobility.”

Hayes Fuels, a family run business, has built up a strong customer base, and currently supply major supermarkets, co-operatives, coal merchants, oil distributors and garage forecourts.

Powerscreen Ireland has been providing equipment, parts and servicing for the quarrying, pit, demolition, waste recycling and material washing industries for over fifteen years. Based in Co Laois, Ireland, they are Powerscreen distributor for the island of Ireland.
